The average Australian drinks a 50 metre swimming pool worth of chlorine over their lifetime.

Did you know the recommended daily water intake for Australian adults is 2.6L? You probably did. But what you didn’t know is that if you drink tap water, that would add up to be the same amount of chlorine as there is in a 50 metre swimming pool over your lifetime.

We’re on a mission to cut that down… Because whether or not you believe that chlorinated water does or doesn’t increase the likelihood of dry skin, congenital abnormalities or bladder and rectal cancer; we can all agree that chlorine adds a foul taste and smell to your water.

And the worse your water tastes, the less likely you are to stay hydrated.

And it's not just Chlorine...

Origins

I had a friend in high school that loved conspiracy theories. He told me about 9/11 being an inside job, the illuminati, and even lizard-human hybrids running the U.S.

As we went into the final years of high school, he started to get obsessed with a new theory. He said our tap water was unsafe to consume.

I’d learnt over the years to always take what he said with a pinch of salt so I didn’t really look into it.

As time went on, I started to hear more and more people bringing up the same issue, until most recently in 2022 it was mentioned on a 2 hour episode of the Huberman lab podcast on water quality and consumption. (If you’d like to listen to this episode, you can find the link HERE.)

And so in 2022, my deep dive into water quality, contaminants, and methods of filtration began…

I stopped drinking tap water and turned to bottled water, but that proved quite expensive and unsustainable.

I then went into a rabbit hole of different filtration devices from reverse osmosis, to water distillers, to whole house systems, you name it.

There’s not a rock I left unturned when it comes to filtration devices and filter elements used inside.

After countless hours of research and hundreds of conversations, these were my takeaways.

  1. Melbourne is among the top 5 cities in the world when it comes to drinking water quality.
  2. Even though this is the case, there are still issues with the water that cannot and will not be solved at the source.
  3. The main contaminants found in Melbourne drinking water are chlorine, chloramine, and THM’s produced through the chemical reaction between chlorine and other contaminants in the water and pipes.
  4. There are currently no cost effective substitutes for chlorine treatment at large scales, which means the only way to solve these issues is with a water filter installed at the point of consumption.

Now here’s the kicker. I tried to look for a filter that was cost effective and solved the whole chlorine issue. But what I found was a bunch of scare-mongering tactics (from legacy and new companies alike) to try and sell expensive systems that ‘bring the TDS down to 0’ and ‘soften your water’ among other common sayings.

So, after cycling through all the different options, I decided to work with a supplier overseas and make myself and my family a filter that did exactly what I needed it to do.

And that’s when the Clearau filter was born.

After many tests and iterations and with the help of feedback from users, I was finally able to create a quality product, specifically tailored to and ready to share with Melbourne homes… The Clearau 2.0.
